21 December 1988 – maiden flight of Antonov An-225 Mriya

Maiden flight of Antonov An-225 Mriya.

Initially developed for the purposes of Soviet space programme ´Buran´ and intended to transport the Buran space-shuttle, Mriya is today the heaviest aircraft ever built, with the maximum take-off weight of 640 tonnes. The aircraft holds several world records related to the weight of single-item payload and total payload. Ten of those records was set during a single flight in March 1989, which is another record itself.

Its name, Mriya, could be translated as either ´dream´ or ´inspiration´.

Today the aircraft is operated by the Antonov Airlines.
