NATO E-3A Sentry performs first AWACS mission in Finnish airspace

As reported by Allied Air Command (AIRCOM), during the first week of March a NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft conducted its first mission in Finnish airspace.

The mission of the Boeing E-3A Sentry marked an important milestone for NATO air operations since Finland joined the Alliance. It enhanced both the integration and surveillance capabilities of NATO while demonstrating the Alliance’s persistent presence in the High North and along the eastern flank.

To ensure the smooth integration of international military assets with Finnish civil air traffic control authorities, the mission of the E-3A Sentry aircraft over Finland was coordinated by Joint Force Command Norfolk (JFCNF).

During its debut mission over Finland, the NATO AWACS aircraft, tasked and controlled by AIRCOM, acted as an airborne battlespace manager. It worked closely with the Finnish Control and Reporting Centre in Rovaniemi and the Air Operations Centre in Jyväskylä. The mission also involved eight F/A-18 fighter jets of Ilmavoimat (the Finnish Air Force), which carried out a four-versus-four air combat training exercise.

The activities were conducted as part of the Eastern Sentry and Arctic Sentry missions, providing NATO with crucial long-range radar surveillance as well as command-and-control capabilities.

“Operating in Finnish airspace for the first time demonstrates our collective commitment to security in the High North,” said Air Commodore Andy Turk, Chief of Staff of the NATO Airborne Early Warning & Control Force. “The flexibility of our AWACS fleet is made possible by established procedures and the close cooperation we maintain with our Finnish Allies. We are truly stronger together. The projection of this critical capability across all corners of the Alliance showcases our operational flexibility.”

Allied Air Command enhances the flexibility required for conducting complex air operations by establishing clear communication channels and common procedures. This level of coordination enables NATO to respond quickly to changing security conditions while maintaining the safety and precision of shared airspace.Through the presence of the E-3A AWACS aircraft in the airspace, NATO and national commanders are provided with a clear and continuous picture of the situation in the air. This ensures a seamless link between the security of individual Allied nations and that of the entire Alliance.

“We have successfully coordinated the first NATO AWACS mission in Finnish airspace under Arctic Sentry,” said Major General Arnfinn Frode Kristoffersen, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at Joint Force Command Norfolk. “This demonstrates how quickly the Alliance can integrate new Allies into our operational framework. By linking NATO capabilities with Finland’s national systems, we strengthened shared situational awareness and reinforced the Alliance’s vigilance and readiness across the High North.”

The Boeing E-3A Sentry AWACS aircraft remain a crucial component of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence system. Thanks to their powerful radar systems and long-endurance mission capability, Allied commanders maintain continuous situational awareness of the airspace over the eastern flank.
