Launch of the 2025 aviation season – Točná open day

With March already here, the first signs of spring made it clear that grey and gloomy days are over, and it was finally the time to launch the 2025 season. And, similarly to 2022, for the first aviation event this year, we went to Prague, where – after a few months of the winter break – gates of Letiště Točná (Točná Airport) were again opened for the public.

The open doors events at Točná Airport already have a long tradition and, usually, are held from spring to autumn, on every second Saturday of the month. Apart from creating a wonderful chance to see up close all the aircraft being based there, those public events also offer an opportunity to see various range of Czech-based historical and vintage aeroplanes, as well as a collection of ultralight aircraft – through their guest appearance during those days.

The first open day of the 2025 aviation season, being also the first public aviation event in the Czech Republic this year, was held at Točná on 8th March 2025. The day was marked with warm and sunny weather that not only resulted in the number of guest aircraft being significantly higher than usual, but also attracted hundreds of visitors to the airfield.

Those who came to Točná on that sunny Saturday afternoon, had an opportunity to see there several iconic aeroplanes, such as nicely made replica of the famous German training biplane Bücker Bü 131 Jungmann; the Soviet training and aerobatic aircraft Yakovlev Yak-18T; and Cessna 180 Skywagon light utility aeroplane developed in the early 1950s.

Numerously represented were the aircraft designed and manufactured during the Czechoslovak years. They included a collection of Zlín Trenér training aeroplanes (Z-126, Z-226MS, Z-526 Trenér Master, Z-526 AFS-V Akrobat Special, Z-143L), Let L-200A Morava, L-60 Brigadýr and Let L-13SW Vivat touring motoglider.

In addition, broad collection of more contemporary general aviation and ultralight aircraft could be seen at Letiště Točná: Tecnam P96 Golf 100, TL Ultralight TL-96 Sting, Tecnam P92 Echo, Aerotechnik P220 UL Koala, Dova Aircraft DV-2 Infinity, Evektor EV-97 Eurostar, BRM Aero Bristell B23 and ICP Savannah S.

As usuall, the spectators were able to see the abovementioned aircraft on a static display, as well as follow their arrivals and departures. In addition, there was also a few flypasts performed by Zlín aeroplanes and a short flying display of two aircraft from the Trenér Box aerobatic team – Z-526 AFS-V Akrobat Special and Z-526 Trenér Master (more information about the team can be found in our article from October of 2024 – Afternoon with the iconic Czechoslovak aircraft – October Zlín Meeting at Točná Airport).

The visitors to the airfield were also able to enjoy the static exhibition of aircraft from the Točná collection, including Beech B35 Bonanza, Waco YKS-6, AT-6C Harvard, Mraz M-1C Sokol, ČKD-Praga E.114M, Robin DR400-180R Remorqueur, Aero C-104S and airworthy replicas of Avia BH-1 and BH-5. The guests paid special attention to Lockheed L-10A Electra, which was under maintenance, thus greatly exposing its port Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior radial engine (more information about the particular aircraft from the collection can be found in the highlighted links).

Last but not least, there was also presentation of the World War II aviation history clubs. At their stands, members of those associations – dressed in the RAF and USAAF uniforms from the era – presented personal equipment, books and other items related to the aerial warfare from the 1940s.

More information about the previous editions of Letiště Točná open days, as well as the aircraft collection located there, can be also found in our reports from September 2021, March 2022 and October 2024.
