MH-139A Grey Wolf programme grows with new USAF order

At the end of January 2026, Boeing announced that it would produce four additional MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters for the United States Air Force (USAF). The latest order, concluded between the company and the US military, will bring the total number of MH-139A rotorcraft under contract to thirty-eight.

The new USAF order marked the second production contract for the aircraft in five months. It followed a USD 173 million award for eight aircraft in September (Eight more MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters for the USAF) and increased the total value of the MH-139A programme to over USD 262 million.

The quick succession of contracts demonstrates that the US Air Force is fully committed to bringing the MH-139A capability to the warfighter as quickly as possible,” said Azeem Khan, Director of the MH-139 programme. “Our team is dedicated to delivering and sustaining these aircraft, driven by a commitment to excellence, with safety and quality as our top priorities.”

To date, twenty-one Grey Wolf helicopters have been delivered to the USAF, including twelve aircraft produced under the low-rate initial production (LRIP) contract awarded in 2023.

The MH-139A Grey Wolf is based on the widely recognised AW139 helicopter, originally developed by AgustaWestland (now Leonardo Helicopters). Manufactured by Boeing in the Philadelphia region of the United States, the MH-139A is fitted with bespoke military equipment by the company.

The Grey Wolf is marketed as a multi-mission helicopter, designed for troop and cargo transport, search-and-rescue operations, and patrol duties.
